Do You Want To Lose Weight Bad Enough?

On a daily basis, I talk to people who want to lose weight but it seems they are not quite sure.  Somebody told me a year ago that she wasn't ready to lose weight, after all "I'm not that big". I saw her recently (a year later) she told me that she had gained another 15 lb and in her own words, she's ready.  When people are not ready to lose weight, it seems whatever you say goes into one ear and out the other (increased chances of diabetes, heart attack, strokes, etc).   For this group of people,  they talk about losing weight in gist, but are really not that serious about the whole thing and they might even joke about it, 'I know I need to lose weight but...'.

Then there comes a moment of awakening.  For a friend of mine it came when she saw a documentary about obese women with high blood pressure who had had heart attacks and how it had totally changed their lives.  She soon joined a gym and changed her diet, the weight loss came soon after.  Since then she has lost about 60 pounds.  Although I had talked with her before her 'moment', none of it mattered until she was ready.  She wanted the weight loss bad enough and it did happen for her.

Unfortunately, we can't have best of both worlds.  We can't go to the Mexican restaurant, have a couple of margaritas with chips (lots of it) and the enchilada dinner and expect to be slim.  Those two worlds can not co-exist.  Again I go back to what I have said a dozen times, what do you really want?  Is it truly the weight loss, or the enchilada dinner?

If you are in your 30s still, and decide to lose weight, don't wait.  The hormone estrogen is on your side.  Once you hit menopause, lower levels of estrogen can cause weight gain.  If you have not had a child and are over weight, don't wait.  After your first pregnancy you will gain even more weight (as you should in order to support the growing baby) but that means even more weight to lose. If you are at any age and diabetes and heart attack run in your family, don't wait.  Losing weight will be the best thing you will have done for yourself and your children.
