Science is a work in progress. The results from a recent study in New England Journal of Medicine have failed to confirm that eating low-fat, high-fiber foods can reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. So just because a scientific study has shown our conventional wisdom to be exaggerated don't run to the pantry and start eating those crackers made from white flour. Our bodies are complex and the biochemical reactions in our bodies are complicated and can not be studied in isolation without thinking about all the other environmental and genetic factors that may play a role. In my opinion no idea is really proven in science and medicine, only not disproven! A theory holds true for a while until something better comes along with clearer evidence to replace it. But until then I am still going to enjoy my high fiber asparagus and high fiber apricots.
