Neatly tucked away in the health care bill will make calorie postings mandatory for restaurants and fast food joints. This will also include vending machines. Some states like New York and California already have calorie posting laws in place, but this ruling will hand over the law to the FDA. By the way the research in New York shows that calorie postings have little effect in the choices that customers make.
As a nation, we know what's bad for us, we just tend to ignore it. This one time, it's OK to have the 500 calorie Big Mac... or it's a birthday party and I can splurge a little, I'll be good tomorrow. I feel really angry right now and it's time to open the bag of chips, I'll be good tomorrow. The problem with this way of thinking is that when tomorrow comes there is yet another excuse to ignore the calorie counts.
