Boost Your Immune System And Eat Rice Krispies Cereal!!

Kellogg Co. is in trouble again for the second time in  year, it has crossed the line for touting health claims on its cereals.  The Federal Trade Commission said that the company has over stepped its boundaries by claiming that various types of its cereals boost the immunity.  The back of the box says that the product has been improved to include antioxidant and nutrients to help your family stay healthy and on the package it says, "with 25% daily value of antioxidants and nutrients-vitamins A, B, C and E".

Last year the FDA warned another company, General Mills, over its Cheerios claim that it benefits the heart and decreases cholesterol.  Interesting, I still see the same guy on the commercial eating a pot (I mean bowl!) of cereal and he hasn't lost an ounce.  According to regulations, if Cheerios can truly affect cholesterol levels, it must be classified as a drug.

Also FDA has found that Kellogg has made claims that its Frosted Mini Wheats Cereal can improve kids' attentiveness by nearly 20%.  In a July 2009 settlement Kellogg was barred from making claims about benefits to cognitive health.  Last year Kellogg had revenues of nearly $13 billion dollars.

But I STILL see ads about Frosted Mini Wheats claiming to increase attentiveness of children.  But by comparison, Mini Wheats are probably better for kids than Lucky Charms or other sweet cereals.  But they all have added sugar except cereals such as Fiber One.  It's just a matter of picking the best of the evils.  Read the back of the box (nutritional information).

And don't buy cereals because some company tells you that they will lower your cholesterol or improve your kids' concentration in class.  We need to be smarter consumers.
