Sugar-free Treats or Tricks?

The average American consumes about 22 teaspoons of sugar everyday, totalling to almost 350 calories. So it is to no one's surprise that many (not just the diabetics) are turning to sugar-free sweets to lose weight or keep their weight down. Manufacturers are coming up with new sugar-free items on a daily basis (or it seems that way), from chocolate bars, to cookies, candy, syrup and cake.

Whereas diabetics comprise only 8% of the population, 30% of Americans say that they regularly consume low-sugar or sugar-free food stuff as a means to battle their weight. But just because something is sugar-free does not mean it is not loaded with fat and is calorie-free. For example Hershey Special Dark bar which is sugar-free has 160 calories, whereas the full-sugar version has 180 calories. In some instances, the difference in calories is virtually negligible. The difference between sugar-free Oreos and regular ones is only 7 calories per serving.

Many sugar-free snacks get their sweetness from compounds called sugar alcohols such as maltitol, sorbitol, and mannitol. These are carbohydrates that our body can not fully metabolize but guess what the side effect might be?? yup! Diarrhea.

Too much of the sugar-free stuff can definitely have a laxative effect. So eating sugar-free foods does little to remedy poor dietary choices.
