My Plate... the New Pyramid

On June 2nd, the Department of Agriculture launched the new food icon: Myplate.  Yet another attempt to help us not overeat and also eat the right stuff.  Myplate has basically replaced the food pyramid.  The First Lady, Michelle Obama said that this new food icon will help families make better and healthier decisions about their meals and snacks.  The icon incorporates basic messages such as 'Make half of your plate vegetables and fruit' and the idea that protein doesn't necessarily have to be meat.

The icon is based on the 'plate method' which is often used in nutrition programs -particularly for those who want  to lose weight or are diabetic and encourages paying special attention to portion size.

According to the new icon, half of the plate should be fruits and vegetables (potatoes don't count!), 1/4 should be protein and a 1/4 should be grain.  If you are using an oversized plate, then you are already overeating regardless of what fractions each food represents.

Here is something to consider if you truly want to lose weight.  And are committed to  this mission which is simple but not easy.  Make 3/4 of your plate vegetables, have a few pieces of fruit everyday, and make protein the one thing you can't skip.  It will make you fuller and keep you fuller.

Regardless of what the Department of Agriculture comes up with, your goal should be a lot of vegetables, some fruit, and protein.  And little to no processed food.
