Movie Theater popcorn...

The FDA wants the movie theaters to fess up about how many calories they pack into those huge tubs of popcorn that sell for close to $8. In fact the FDA wants all food establishments to reveal the caloric content of the food stuff they sell, however movie theaters are pushing back, saying that the original health bill never intended to include movie theaters.  If the did have those numbers posted would you still buy popcorn or reach in your bag in the darkness of the theater for the apple your smuggled?  I predict most people wouldn't care about the possible caloric postings.  But in case the truth would change your mind and get you to save 1000 calories and some money, here is a an estimate of those calories... they are sobering and probably not new to you.

Small popcorn (approximately 7 cups) with butter       more than 600 calories

Medium popcorn (app. 11 cups) with butter               more than 1100 calories

Large popcorn (app. 16 cups) with butter                   more than 1600 calories

Here are a few techniques that may work for you:

1. Dont' go to the theater hungry

2. Take your own snack, discreetly!  These can include apples, cheese, yogurt or even a light sandwich.   Pretty much anything you take from home will be healthier than the popcorn (of course this excludes chips, candy and cookies, but you already knew that!).

3.  Don't go to the theater too early.  Leave just enough time to purchase the tickets and get good seats.  That way you won't be tempted to stand in line for popcorn.

With the summer fast approaching who needs more than 1000 calories just for a snack?
